The DODGE CHALLENGER MAGAZINE
When Dodge unveiled a new Challenger Concept car in January 2006, the car set the automotive world on edge. Building upon the excitement, Dodge announced that this car was more than a concept and would go to production. Classic Mopar fans and modern performance enthusiast both waited anxiously to see how closely the production car would follow the concept car that captured so much attention. Thankfully, the new Dodge Challenger that hit the streets in mid 2008, took everything great from the concept, refined it and the final result is arguably the best recreation of a classic muscle car. The classic lines and many of the styling details of the original were merged with a full independent suspension and computer managed Gen III HEMI delivering not only power, but efficiency. In this writer’s opinion, the new Dodge Challenger is even better than the original incorporating the classic lines and styling of the original with modern performance that is not only fun, but reliable.
Moving forward, in 2008, Viking Media Group set out to create an online magazine dedicated to the new Challenger. Rather than just talk about production models and promote aftermarket parts, we wanted to focus our attention on what could be done with this modern muscle car. So to get started, we set our sights on building a project car that would refine and improve on the work of Dodge designers and engineers. While there would be many who would of taken an extreme approach building a high power ground pounder, we chose a reality based approach for people wanting a car for real world driving.
When you start with a $31,000 car with lifetime factory warranty that is getting 25 mpg on the highway, the challenge became how to improve the car without damaging the daily usability or the warranty.
To get started, we took a bare bones, zero option 2009 RT 6 Speed we found just rolling off the truck at a Houston Dodge dealer. Some quick negotiating and an hour later, we drove home to begin what became our first project car that we call “Rapid Transit RT”.
